The Arthaus is a specialist expressive arts block primarily for use by post sixteen pupils. It comprises of two separate 220mm2 open plan spaces interlinked by a moveable wall. This allows large art projects to be carried out in the art room and then displayed for exhibitions and exam moderation in the open plan space. Large glazed elevations and rooflight’s provide a naturally well lit and ventilated space. The new build also has a photographic study, dark room and a mezzanine study area. The spaces also open up into the existing dining area allowing for maximum flexibility, but it can also be closed off to provide a self contained building with its own entrance and amenities for evening functions and exhibitions.
Rastrick High School
New maths block and physical impairment suite
A specialist technology college in Calderdale has seen replacement of an existing block to make way for new facilities.
Rastrick High School & Sixth Form College is a large mixed gender school with Academy status, neighboured by the towns of Brighouse and Elland in the heart of West Yorkshire.
The latest project involved constructing a new mathematics centre. Work included replacing the old block as well as providing much-needed toilet and physical impairment (PI) facilities.
The relocation of the maths teaching facilities had been considered within the school’s development plans to rationalise the site and address the changing needs of the school.
Linking the main school and a satellite teaching block, the maths centre building has a glazed atrium and a glass floor that allows light deep into the plan. Swift boxes located on the side elevation provide a home for several birds.
At 1,600sq m, the 3 storey building is constructed from traditionally masonry and steel frame to complement the existing school. New toilets are open plan designed to anti bullying guidelines.
The school was awarded funding from the Education Funding Agency to build this fabulous new teaching block for maths. The new accommodation provides much needed and welcome care facilities for students with physical disabilities. Rastrick High School is the Calderdale Resource Provision for physically impaired students.
The Crossley Heath School is steeped in well over 400 years of tradition and has survived many different phases in its long history to become a central part of the community of Halifax and a hugely successful school.
1985 saw probably the biggest change when Crossley and Porter School amalgamated with Heath Grammar School to form the Crossley Heath School.
The first significant date in this history of Heath Grammar School is February 15th 1585 when Queen Elizabeth signed the charter establishing “the free grammar school of Queen Elizabeth.”
The Crossley Heath school building owes its existence to the philanthropy of the Crossley brothers, Francis, John and Joseph. In 1857, they formulated a scheme for the establishment of a ‘superior College for the district’. Building work began the same year but by 1861 the brothers had decided to establish an ‘Orphan Home and School for Boys and Girls’. With the building work complete, the first six orphans, all boys, arrived in June 1864
Langtry-Langton have been retained at the schoolsince 1994 and have completed many refurbishments and new-uild projects at the school. The most interesting project was the installation of a passenger lift in a unused ventilation chimney – Giving full access to all floors.
